CALVIN PEETE AND HIS CADDIE
History
IN 1950, 10 YEARS AFTER CHANGING THE NAME FROM ‘AUGUSTA NATIONAL INVITATION TOURNAMENT’ TO ‘THE MASTER’S TOURNAMENT’, JIMMY DEMARET, WHO HAD WON THE FIRST OFFICIAL MASTER’S TOURNAMENT SECURED HIS THIRD MAJOR. IN CELEBRATION OF HIS VICTORY HE REACHED INTO THE 18TH HOLE AND PULLED OUT A RABBIT. AN ICONIC MOMENT WITH A CAPTIONED “…CADDIE IS UNIDENTIFIED”.

CADDYING TODAY MAY BE A LUCRATIVE PROFESSION, YET IN THE EARLY DAYS WHEN GOLF’S GLORY WAS RESERVED FOR A FEW THE DUTY WAS SERVED BY THOSE WHO WERE NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY AT AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB. DESPITE THE EXCLUSION, THE SECRETS OF ITS ROLLING HILLS AND MANICURED GREENS WERE COMMON KNOWLEDGE TO THE MEN WHO STOOD IN THE BACKGROUND. MUCH LIKE THE RABBITS BURROWING BELOW THE PRESTINE COURSE THEIR LABORS WERE NEVER SEEN EVEN WHEN PHOTOGRAPHED ALONGSIDE LEGENDS.
